Storing and caring for cornhole boards takes a little bit of effort. None of it is all that challenging but if you want to make sure your cornhole boards last as long as possible, you do need to take some steps to be proactive about caring for them properly.
When you store the board in between uses, there are tips for doing so. There are also regular care tips that help keep the board clean and maintained over time. We’re here to share all of these need to know details with you!
Cornhole Board Storage
When you aren’t using the board, you can store it away so it isn’t just sitting in everyone’s way. You definitely don’t want to leave it outside where it can get rained on or anything like that.
The American Cornhole Association strongly suggests that you find a cool, dry location to store your cornhole set. This might be somewhere like a storage closet or even possibly your garage or another storage area in the home.
Companies that offer guarantees on their boards do so with the intent of you properly storing the board. Storage is simple, you just have to think about what’s right for the longevity of the board.
The key to a great storage location is that the space is dry and not subject to extreme heat or cold.
In this space, you might also try to make sure it won’t be hit or scratched by anything around it or that it won’t end up subjected to chemicals or heavy dust as well. All of these things can harm the board or cause more issues with the longevity of the board itself.
It’s a good idea to cover the board when it is in storage to protect it from dust and dirt in the air.
Cornhole Board Cleaning and Maintenance
While storing the board is an important element, keeping your board clean is also very important.
While you don’t have to be obsessive about cleaning your board, it does need general cleaning. You should always clean it before you store it. Clean it after each time of use as well. If it’s stored for long periods of time, you may want to clean it occasionally just to prevent dust from settling on it.
Cleaning the board is relatively easy. Just grab a cloth that is damp with water and wipe the board down thoroughly. Wipe the entire surface to remove any dirt, debris, or dust that has found its way onto the board.
If for some reason the damp cloth doesn’t really get your board clean, you can use warm soapy water and a scrubbing cloth to clean the board a little further. If you use a scrubbing cloth, you need to remember to use something gentle still as you don’t want to scratch the surface of your board.
Avoid Weather
Bad weather can quickly degrade your board. Things like rain or snow leave moisture on your board that can cause it to weaken or even rot if it isn’t taken care of properly.
It’s not just moisture that you have to be mindful of here. You also need to not expose your board to extreme heat or extreme cold for extended periods of time. Remember that your board is made from wood and any combination of these things can be hard on wood.
Sometimes, you simply might not be able to avoid a couple of hours of heat or even some rain. What you want to try to avoid is extended exposure to these elements. If your board does get rained on or sits in the sun, just be sure to care for it properly afterward.
For example, if your board was rained on, be sure to let it dry completely before storing it away.
Polyurethane Coating
When you purchase a cornhole board, it usually has already been prepped and prepared for you. Most of the companies that make these boards will add a protective coating over the paint or designs that are applied to it.Over time, that coating could wear thin or be affected by the age of your board. If you feel like your board is starting to look aged and worn, you might be able to rejuvenate it with a simple coat of polyurethane.
This coating will gloss up the board a little bit and make it look shiny once again. Keep in mind you should not need to do this right away with a brand new board. It’s something to consider down the road as your board starts to age.
Cornhole Bag Care
If you have a cornhole board to take care of, you probably also have some bags. Taking care of your cornhole bags is just as important as caring for the boards.You will find that the rules for caring for the bags are pretty similar to caring for the boards. You should plan to store cornhole bags in a cool and dry location. Storing them with your boards is probably ideal here. You should be sure to put your bags in some sort of storage bag or case to protect them from dust and dirt.
Some cornhole board sets actually have storage inside of them for your bags but just be sure they are properly protected.
Finally, if you really want to take the care of your cornhole bags to the next level, you can freeze them occasionally. When you do this, you just freeze them for a period of 24 hours and then you can return them to storage or leave them in the freezer until you need them.
