Basic Cornhole Rules Everyone Needs to Know

Put on your game face and get ready for some intense cornhole action! This classic outdoor game is a great way to have some fun with family and friends, but you need to know the cornhole game rules before you can start playing. Let’s dive into everything you need to know about the basics of cornhole so you can join in on the fun!

What Is Cornhole?

Cornhole is an outdoor game that may have originated in the United States, although its true origin is not really known. It’s played between two teams made up of two players each. Each team has four wooden boxes with holes called boards, which are spaced 27 feet apart. The goal of the game is simple – toss a beanbag into one of your opponent’s holes and score points based on how well you do. The team with the most points at the end wins!

How Long is a Cornhole Game?

A typical cornhole game typically lasts for about 45 minutes to an hour. This can vary depending on the skill of the players, their ages and whether they are playing a singles or doubles game. Before starting, players should agree on how many points will be needed to win the game so that everyone knows how long it will take.

Can You Play With Just 2 Players?

Yes - you can play with just two players, although it is more fun with doubles. In singles, each player takes turns throwing the bag one at a time. The player with the most points at the end of the game is declared the winner. In doubles, each team has two players who take turns tossing their beanbags as a team. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Can Anyone Play The Game?

Absolutely! Cornhole is a game for all ages, as long as you can throw the beanbag at least 15-20 feet. Kids and adults alike can enjoy this classic outdoor activity.  It’s also a great way to get some fresh air and exercise while having fun with friends and family.

What Are Bean Bags Made Of?

Beanbags used to play cornhole should be six inches by six inches square and filled with whole kernel corn, although they can also be filled with other materials such as plastic pellets or even sand if desired. The bags should weigh between 14-16 ounces and have two different colors – one color per team – so players can easily differentiate between them during gameplay.

What is the Difference Between Corn Filled & Resin Bags?

Corn filled bags are filled with whole kernel corn, while resin bags are filled with a plastic material. Corn filled bags have more weight and create less bounce when they hit the board, which can make them easier to score points with. Resin bags have more bounce and can be harder to control during play. However, they can also add an element of excitement to the game, as they can create different trajectories when hitting the board.

Where Can You Buy Cornhole Sets?

You can purchase cornhole sets from a variety of retailers both online and in-store. Make sure to look for a set that is regulation size – boards should be 24” x 48” and the bags should be six inches by six inches.  Additionally, double check that the boards and bags are made of high quality materials so you can enjoy hours of fun without them breaking or wearing down quickly.

Scoring Points in Cornhole

In order to play cornhole, each team must stand opposite from their opponent’s board, 27 feet away from their own board. The first player from each team takes turns tossing beanbags towards their opponents' side; if a bag goes through or lands directly in a hole, it scores three points for that round. If it does not go through or land directly in a hole, it scores one point for that round.

After all eight bags are tossed, both teams tally up their points and the team with the highest score earns one point for that round. If there is a tie, neither team receives any points for that round. The first team to reach 21 points wins!

Fun Variations of Cornhole

Cornhole can be played in a variety of different ways - so don’t be afraid to get creative and try something new. Some popular variations include timed games, elimination rounds, and even “blind bagging” where players have to aim blindly at the other team's board before they can see the result.

No matter what variation you choose, cornhole is sure to provide hours of fun for all ages. So grab a few friends, some bean bags and get to tossing – it’s time for a game of Cornhole!
