7 Common Cornhole Questions and Answers

When it comes to playing cornhole, there can be a lot of questions. While it’s a pretty simple game to learn, there are certain details to know. Before you drag out your cornhole boards, take a look at these common questions and their complete answers.

What Size Should My Cornhole Boards Be?

The American Cornhole Association sets the standard for cornhole sets when it comes to the size. If you want the official size that meets tournament standards, look for these measurements:
  • Length: 47.5 - 48 inches
  • Width: 23.5 to 24 inches
  • Thickness: ½ - ¾ inches

Other requirements include the following:

  • The hole should be 6 inches in diameter
  • The hole center should be 12 inches from each side and 9 inches from the top
  • The back should be about 12 inches tall at the highest point
  • The front should be only about 3-4 inches from top to bottom

How Can You Put Spin on The Cornhole Bag?

When you’re working on your toss, you can do a few different things. One technique that’s used often is adding some spin. It does take some practice to learn how to add spin.

Just like with your regular toss, you want the bag to be flat on your hand before you release it. In order to add some spin, you just need to spin your hand a bit.

Try turning your hand slightly inwards towards you as you pull back for the toss. As you release your arm outwards to release the bag, move your hand outward as well. It’s almost the same form you’d use to throw a frisbee, except that you hold the bag differently.

This should add just enough spin that your bag won’t bounce out of the hole.

Can Anyone Play Cornhole?

Absolutely anyone can play cornhole for fun. If the goal is to play in tournaments, there are groups for all ages.

The standard set-up includes adults and juniors. In most cases, juniors are 12 and under.

How Far Apart Should I Set My Cornhole Boards?

In a normal cornhole game, the boards should be 27 feet apart. However, there are exceptions to that rule that reduce the distance to 21 feet for kids as well as elderly and disabled players.

If you are just playing for fun at home, you can set your boards up however you feel comfortable. Just be aware that if you ever decide to play in a tournament, the distance does matter.

If you don’t have a tape measure handy, you can gauge the distance by taking about 10 steps between the boards. This won’t be exact, but it should get you close. If you have a tape measure, that’s the best way to make sure they are set up correctly.

How Do You Win a Cornhole Game?

It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the scoring system before you play. This is a game of counting points. The first player to reach 21 points wins the game.

Of course, there are some caveats to getting there. First, you need to win with exactly 21 points, so you might need to be strategic there. The points you score with each toss depend on whether your bag lands on the board or goes through the hole.

It’s 3 points for a bag in the hole and 1 point for a bag on the board. Points are totaled at the end of the round.

How Do You Properly Care for Cornhole Boards?

Cornhole boards are easy to care for if you just keep in mind some basic tips. First of all, while your board is most likely sealed to make it last, you don’t want to leave it out in the weather all the time.

After all, these boards are made of wood. While a little bit of rain when you’re playing won’t ruin them, you don’t want that to be the norm. If you habitually leave your boards out in the rain, they may not last as long as they should.

The best way to take care of your cornhole boards is to make sure they are stored away in a clean, dry location when they aren’t in use. Dust them off occasionally and keep them dry to keep them looking their best.
